One of this year's hottest issues is the call for an Article V Constitutional Convention being promoted in radio personality Mark Levin's new book.

Citizens for Liberty has invited John F. McManus, President of the John Birch Society to present reasons why we should not support a dangerous Article V Convention also called a Convention of the States.

There is a threat that exits to destroy our Constitution through an Article 5 Constitutional Convention. The John Birch Society has a long history on this subject and has been effective preventing a convention numerous times. How? Education and Action.

No matter how good their proposals may sound, the following statements are true:

1. Once a con-con committee is formed, there is no reliable way to control their agenda. The results could lead to an entirely new constitution, as proven by the Philadelphia Convention that was started to amend the Articles of Confederation but resulted in an entirely new Constitution. Yes, we got lucky that time, but who knows what we'd wind up with in our current political climate.

2. The main problem in the United States today is that we have a federal government that doesn't follow the Constitution: the document that created this government and strictly limited its powers. It is simply illogical to make changes to a document that is not being obeyed. Adding an amendment that restates what the Constitution already says, or adds the phrase "...and we really mean it!" won't fix this situation.

The answer to our problem isn't to change the Constitution, but to force the government to obey the document. The flaw isn't in the Constitution, itself, it's that no document can defend itself! That, friends, is up to us!
